Era II: Medieval Legends
Welcome to the wonderful world of magic and wizardry, welcome to the land of the past, welcome to ERA II Medieval Legends!
If you are in the videogame-film-trailer music creation and/or historical music, this is a must.
This is not a library for everyone, this is one of the finest and “made with love” libraries that I ever had the honor to review.
Ok, let´s start to talk about this jewel taken from the Dragon´s treasure.
Era II is the sequel of ERA and it includes 25 more instruments than its predecessor reaching the number of 70.
If you don´t know about Era Medieval Legends, I could resume it in this way, a travel to the past, in the best way that could be possible.
If you need some medieval instruments for your compositions, this is your best choice. if you are looking for a “normal” orchestral library, then you are in the wrong place.
For that subject I recommend to look our previous posts in this page, you will find Versillian Chamber Orchestra (traditional orchestral set) and Orchestral Essentials by ProjectSam (filmscore oriented).
Era is now a franchise, it begins with the original Era and now we have all these titles:
Era II Medieval Legends
Era II Vocal Codex
Ancient Persia Era
and the newest Celtic Era
In the time this review is seeing the light, the new release called“Celtic Era” is out now.
If you have another “Era” title, you could crossgrade and buy the new Celtic Era at a reduced price.
This library has no competitors, if you are looking for a medieval library that is all in one place, crafted with the best equipment, players and engineers out there, this is your library.
This library comes with Best Service Engine, this Engine works pretty well and it is included for free, that is a great thing, it is like the Kontakt player version of NI.
The army of Light and
the army of Darkness:
ERA II is divided in two great sections
1 - Instruments
2 – Sound Design
The Instruments are divided into 6 categories
Each one containing different instruments, check the full list at Best Service Site.
The user interface is nice and friendly, there is no trouble to find the options, everything is well organized and clean. It has 3 windows:
Main Screen, Controls Screen and Info Screen.
Each one has different options.
The manual is great also, it is well written and it is very easy to understand, it contains a little description of each instrument and how it works, also in some instruments reminds us in which way it used to be played.
For example, in Psaltery(Beaten) it says that is a rhythmic instruments; the fact that can play notes doesn´t make it melodic, that kind of advice is to make more accurate our compositions, obviously if you want, you can not listen to this advice and compose melodic lines, but it is good to remind us how it used to be played historically.

Crafting unreal worlds:
The section about sound design is also great, one can make a lot of atmosphere music with it, it blends perfectly with the instruments, and is a great addition to the library. In this section is very easy to customize the settings, each one of the soundscapes comes with 1 to 6 layers, that you can turn on/off.
Another cool feature is the singers at the tavern, if you are making music for a film or a game this is a very nice touch.
The Library and the Man:
The creator Eduardo Tarilonte is a very nice and humble person, he puts all his efforts to create this library and it gives results.
The creator´s mind could be summarize in this quote "Be yourself. In a world full of people trying to imitate other’s music or creations, being yourself must be where you have to hold tightly not to get lost. Before a career, music is something that is really deep inside of us. It cannot just become a profession where everything is valid as far as you get money. That’s not the reason why we love music and why we started up our future as musicians." Taken from an interview from 2012 https://theaudiospotlight.com/eduardo-tarilonte-interview/
Every instrument is perfectly crafted and achieved, it contains RR, true legato, and true portato.
The library costs 259 euros and you can grab it at www.bestservice.com.
The first time I heard about this library I was astonished. I didn´t believe that could be possible to have all these instruments in one bundle.
But sometimes my friends, real life can dazzle you.
If you are working on a Medieval/Fantasy world, this is your best instrument choice, you will never regret about it.
Extremely complete library, well crafted sound and made with passion.
Composing for fantasy and medieval worlds never was so easy, Era II Medieval Legends is a must.
If you need more colors for your palette you can buy the other libraries made by Eduardo Tarilonte and then you will have an army of instruments ready for you.
